Omanu Beach

Omanu Beach is beautiful white sand backed by a narrow grass and sand dune reserve. Behind this is a very well established residential area. The local community combined with visitors to the area makes this beach very active during the summer months. Swimmers are safe during low wave energy days but large holes and rips will be present in swells over a metre. Beach conditions will also change a great deal between high and low tide. Swimmers are advised to stay in the patrolled area and any beach users that are in doubt should ask a Lifeguard. Omanu Beach has a Lifeguarding service over weekends in the summer. Professional Lifeguards operate for six weeks during primary school holidays.

Ratings

Family friendly

This beach is well suited for families with great facilities and patrolled by Surf Lifeguards over the summer months. Make sure your family is prepared for the beach conditions.

Swimming

Swimming at Omanu Beach is very popular during the summer months. There is a large local community base and this is boosted greatly during the summer months with holidaymakers and tourists. The beach is safe for swimming when the surf is small, half a metre or so. When waves reach a metre they become dangerous for swimmers with strong rips and currents filling the gaps between bars. Swimmers should stay in the patrolled area as the Lifeguards will have singled this out as the safest swimming area.

Surfing

Surfing is very popular at Omanu Beach. There is commonly good surfing bars, with both left and right-hand waves coming in all along the beach. The beach is surfable on all tides, and it is offshore in a south to southwest wind. Good surf can be found nearly anywhere along the beach so surfers will have to search to find the best waves with the least crowds.

Fishing

Omanu Beach is a good surfcasting location although most fishermen would be inclined to head north to Leisure Island. Pipi’s can be easily found all along this beach and these make great fritters and the perfect bait for tarakihi. Getting offshore in a boat will provide the best fishing and unless you have a small boat you will probably want to launch from the boat ramp at the Mount.
