Boaties

Are you an adrenaline junkie? Then Surf Boats are for you!

Surf boats is all about big surf, high excitement levels and being very social. Omanu Beach SLSC is a reasonably strong boatie club, and can currently accommodate up to 7 boat crews.

To compete in Surf Boats, you need to first be a lifeguard. Therefore, you need to be at least 14 years old to become a boatie. Rumour has it, Omanu Beach SLSC currently has the oldest registered boatie in New Zealand. For more information on how to become a lifeguard click here.

Surf Boats is a team event, with a minimum crew of five needed to fill a boat. The different positions in the boat allow for members of all sizes to find their place. You do need a reasonable level of fitness to participate. However, our crews train throughout the winter, giving you plenty of time to be ready for the summer season.

All our crews train at different times. There is flexibility to work in around you and your current commitments.

Training can be at Omanu Beach or Pilot Bay, depending on surf conditions and the training goal. Training also includes indoor rowing machine sessions.

If you feel you can not completely commit to a boat team, you can still be part of a crew as a ‘fill in’. The crews are always looking for people to fill in during training and competitions when one member is unable to make it.

Omanu Beach SLSC provides as much equipment as it can so athletes can undertake training at the highest level. Funding is  sought every season maintain our equipment.

Athletes who are a part of the Boatie squads are required to pay a Sports Fee of $100 dollars for the current season. This cost will cover surf boat costs, boat repairs and the use of the club rooms.

Payment can be made at registration time or through the office.

Athletes are required to purchase club togs and a cap for racing. These items can be purchased through the club office.

Once you have paid the athlete’s training fee, you will be provided with a safety vest. Safety vests MUST be worn when in the water during competitions. If you loose your safety vest will need to purchase another one.
