Become a Lifeguard

Lifeguarding is our main priority here at Omanu Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Our volunteers are responsible for patrolling nearly 8km of coastline from Tay St Beach down past Arataki. The top priority for our lifeguards is always the flagged area, you can usually find the Red and Yellow flags located near our Club House, at the end of Surf Road.

To join us here at OBSLSC please complete this registration form*.

Becoming a lifeguard

We are always looking to expand our lifeguard membership and would love to have you involved!

If you wish to become a qualified surf lifeguard, you will need to be 14 years or older on the date of your exam. The exam is run to Surf Life Saving New Zealand standards and will include the following components:

  • 400m pool swim in under 8 minutes and 45 seconds
  • A 200m run/swim/run in the surf
  • CPR Test
  • Tube Rescue test
  • Theory exam
  • First Aid questions

Our fantastic group of Instructors will teach you everything you need to know in order to be prepared to sit your lifeguard exam and gain this qualification. Please contact us on [email protected] to find out when our next course is and get enrolled!

Patrol Support Award

If you would like to become a volunteer lifeguard but cannot complete the swim requirements then Patrol Support award is perfect for you! The Patrol Support qualification allows you to do everything a lifeguard would do (First aid, scanning the beach, communications) except the water components including rescues. Patrol Support members can be a vital asset to our patrols, and often specialise in areas such as first aid and search and rescue operations. As above, please contact us on [email protected] for further information on upcoming course opportunities.
